Tongue and Tone

This past week has been a good one for me.  I have enjoyed being with my family.  As is within families sometimes the way in which we speak to each other is not always the very best.  I decided to dig up this article from May 2007 and re-read it and share it here with you.  I was inspired to write it after reading Silver Boxes - The Gift of Encouragement. May it bless you as it has blessed me.

A little word in kindness spoken,
A motion or a tear,
Has often healed the heart that’s broken,
And made a friend sincere.
Then deem it not an idle thing
A pleasant word to speak;
The face you wear – the thoughts you bring-
The heart may heal or break.

From “A Little Word”

By Daniel Clement Colesworthy
(14 July 1810 – 1893)

She opens her mouth in skilful and godly Wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness [giving counsel and instruction].  Proverbs 31:26 Amp

Tongue:  discourse, speech, language, dialect, idiom, the power of speech, manner or style of speaking,
Tone: Sound in relation to quality, volume, duration and pitch, characteristic sound, disposition, mood, characteristic style or tendency, expressive of feeling,
Words: A communication, a message, information, command, signal, direction, intention, Language used in anger, rebuke or otherwise emotional.  A term, expression, account, promise

Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it  shall eat  the fruit  thereof.

What are words:
They convey our desires, fears, and thoughts.  They are easily ambiguous and can be misunderstood.  Their purpose is to transfer ideas, impart knowledge, to break down barriers,
Our words flow one way   from us to others, once spoken they are gone forever, the thought is sown.  We can never retrieve them.  The meaning can get lost so easily so we need to select suitable words, be clear and articulate of the intended message.

Speak too much ? Don’t say enough ?
Are we unfair in our words ?
  •  To him who answers a matter before it is heard to him it is shame.
Are we sarcastic and bitter?
  • Proverbs 12:18  There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword,
  • Proverbs 15 : 4  but wilful contrariness in it breaks down the spirit.
Are we ungodly in our speech ?
  • Ephesians 5:4  Let there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful ( silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness (to God).
  • James 3: 8-10  But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
  • Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
  • Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing, My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Are we defiling ourselves?
  • Matthew 15:11 It is not what goes into the mouth of a man that makes him unclean and defiled, but what comes out of the mouth; this makes a man unclean and defiles him.
  • Matthew 15 : 18  But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what makes a man unclean and defiles him.
Defile: to make foul or dirty, to tarnish, corrupt the purity of, to violate the chastity of, to profane, to pollute, unclean, common, shared by all, unholy, to render foul.

Are we using our words to gossip ?

Gossip:  One who runs from house to house, with idle talk, habitually indulges, idle, saying things we ought not to, keeps quarrels alive often with malicious intent, empty worthless talk,
  • Proverbs 13:3 but he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
  • Proverbs 18:8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds and they go down into the inner most parts of the belly.
What should we be doing?

Gates across our lips:
  • Psalm 141.3  Set a guard, O Lord, before my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips.
  • Proverbs 21:23  he who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from troubles
  • Proverbs 13:3 he who guards his mouth keeps his life,
Judge not……
  • Matthew 7:1-3 Judge not that you be not judged. For with what judgement you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?
We have a responsibility as older women to be discreet in our words,
  • Psalm 19.14  Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, ….
We need to prepare our minds for action, be self controlled, Be positive, focus on the goodness of our God, His loving kindness and pass it on to our children,
  • Psalm 107.21 & 22 Oh, that men would praise and confess to the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!
  • And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanks giving and rehearse His deeds with shouts of joy and singing!
  • Hebrews 13.15  Through Him, therefore, let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name.
Be gentle
  • Proverbs 15 : 4  A gentle tongue [with its healing power] is a tree of life, but wilful contrariness in it breaks down the spirit.
  • Proverbs 12:18  but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
How does this appear in our day to day living:
  1. Search out the scriptures Proverbs (Pro = positive   Verbs = actions ) and Deut are a good place to start
  2. Give positive instruction, fill their hearts with what they aught to be doing rather then what they are not to do   i.e. “Please put your feet on the floor” as an alternative to “Don’t put your feet on the couch.”
  3. Never give a command unless you intend for it to be obeyed.  (GKGW 151) Say what you mean and mean what you say or you will be encouraging children that will nag you till you change your mind.  [Double mindedness makes us unstable in all our ways {James}
  4. Be direct, don’t ask their permission …..“Ok”
  5. “Do you have the freedom to do that?” & “I am sorry I don’t have the freedom to do that”
  6. Give them the moral reason why. (Deut a good place to start to fill your moral warehouse as to the reason why.)
  7. Take time to enter their private world, remember to do more listening here than talking as the adage goes don’t be a bull in a china shop!
  8. Verbalize your love for each child and your spouse in their love language
  9. The interrupt rule – respect and honour to those older
  10. Cultivate best friends in siblings (GKGW 237 – 238)
  11. Respect for property – ask permission (GKGW 137 – 140)
  12. Moral Innocence – guidance on how to answer those big questions.
  13. Obedience – “Yes mommy”  without challenge or complaint
  14. Be assertive don’t become a threatening and complaining parent (GKGW 149 – 150)
  15. Your attitude sets the tone for your family.  So what is the fragrance of your home ? Be the thermostat and not the thermometer.
  16. Pre-activity talks (GKGW 167) – let them know what you expect, draw them to the standard. There is good, better and best.  Talk about the differences.
  17. Exchanging common courtesies “yes please”  “no thank you”, looking at one another.
  18. Couch time – not interrupting the time you and your spouse are together.
  19. Commend them for character not action.  i.e.  not “Thank you for being a good girl” but rather “Well done for waiting patiently”.
  20. Be careful of getting into the habit of bribing (GKGW  149-150) “If you are good in the store today I will buy you a lollie”
  21. Don’t use scare tactics on your children you will undermine their trust in you eg “If you are naughty in the store today I will call the police to come and get you”   These sorts of statements establish a false and improper motivation for obedience.
  22. Keep watch!  Training children to restrain their unkind speech is one of the most overlooked areas in our parenting.
  23. Whining (GKGW 228 - 230) is an unacceptable form of communication.  It is often a subtle challenge of your parental authority.  Persistent and uncorrected whining can wear down the best of mothers. Be firm no whining !  Provide a positive alternative e.g. with a child not speaking yet teach them simple sign language.  In older children firmly but gently say “No whining” then have the child repeat what it is you want them to say.  Once this is established when an older child whines, have them wait a few minutes and ask again with out whining.
  24. As with what we learned in : ‘Red cup Blue cup’ last month beware that you don’t fall into the trap of constantly negotiating every instruction (GKGW 5 : 150/1)
  25. Re-read Chapter 10 in GKGW manual: Discipline with Encouragement. (161-170)
  26. Remember more is caught then taught they will not take on board that which you have not mastered yourself.  Your children will reflect what they see in much the same way that a mirror reflects you.
Ephesians 4:29  Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever ] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favour) to those who hear it.

Some books to read:
1. Proverbs
2. Deuteronomy
3. Silver BoxesFlorence Littauer
4. Me and My Big Mouth – Joyce Meyer.

Remember it is the mighty oak which doth from a little acorn grow.  What you do today you will reap the fruit of tomorrow.

What resources have you used in the past to tame your tongue and encourage you ?

Blessings my Friends. May your week ahead be seasoned with His grace and may the meditations of your hearts be acceptable to Him.

This article was written by me originally for a GEMS (Godly Encouragement ofr MotherS) presentation in Christchurch New Zealand.
It has been published in the GEMS Facets Journal Vol 14 which is still available for purchase.

"A" you're adorable

My daughter called me over today and showed me this (Thank you so much Miss J). I think as mothers we need to hear this every now and then

For those of you who would like the lyrics:

When Johnny Jones was serenading Mary,
He sure could quote a lot of poetry
But he'd much rather tell her
what he learned in his speller
When they both attended PS thirty-three....

(chorus)
"A," you're adorable, "B," you're so beautiful,
"C," you're a cutie full of charms.
"D," you're a darling and "E," you're exciting
And "F," you're a feather in my arms.
"G," you look good to me, "H," you're so heavenly,
"I," you're the one I idolize.
"J," we're like Jack and Jill, "K," you're so kissable,
"L," is the lovelight in your eyes.

"M," "N," "O," "P," I could go on all day.
"Q," "R," "S," "T," alphabetically speaking, you're OK.

U," made my life complete, "V," means you're very sweet,
Double-"U" "X" "Y" "Zee."
It's fun to wander through the alphabet with you
To tell you what you mean to me.
(repeat the chorus)

Spring is in the air ...

The sun has been shining and the skies have been beautifully blue today so we took our Sonlight read alouds hopped onto the tramp and did our reading there.

We are really enjoying Sonlight's choice of reading so far.  In fact the books are so good even Sir N's Aunty and cousin enjoyed a read together today.  Aunty M stated "I think I need to join in your homeschool"

One of the most interesting things I learned today is that frogs can have heart shaped pupils!

It felt so much like spring had arrived that I decided to do some macro photography in the garden

Hope you are enjoying the first signs of Spring

Tuesdays Treasures (1-9)

The Usborne ART Treasury

I have discovered a wonderful book at our local library: The Usborne ART Treasury and a treasury it truly is.

This book contains beautiful art from around the world. Each piece of art is featured on a double page spread, there is a short description of the particular work of art, a short biographical of the artist and an simple explanation about a method used.
The next set of pages contain a picture of a project you can do, as well as a detailed step by step on how to accomplish the project at home.

I am so impressed with this book that I have ordered one for myself.

A Prime Mover

The idea that vivifies teaching ... is that 'Education is a Science of Relations;' by which phrase we mean that children come into the world with a natural [appetite] for, and affinity with, all the material of knowledge;  -Charlotte Mason

The above quote has been on my mind for a while and one of my goals has been to get out at least once a month to explore and do with Sir N. The window of wonder and enjoyment for the simple pleasures of life is a very limited one with children and this too has been driving me to find things to do together. One of my frustrations is that a lot of things are really expensive to experience and we just simply can not afford to do them.

As I pondered the words "Education is a Science of Relations" I realised that there are a lot of people we know that work in a wide variety of fields out there.

Our friends Mr & Mrs R are an example of this. M*** drives a Prime Mover here in Australia and part of his portfolio is that he drives interstate.  He has been driving prime movers for over thirty years and has some very interresting stories to tell.
A few months ago he invited Sir N to see his prime mover with it's trailers and then yesterday we went over for lunch and M*** had brought his prime mover home for the weekend (without it's trailers) and Sir N was itching to take a second look.  M*** graciously opened her up and let Sir N climb in and explore.

Here is a photo story of Sir N's first encounter with M***'s truck and yesterdays explorations.  M*** generously and patiently answered all of our questions and helped us understand a little more about these huge trucks that keep our country moving along.  Thank you so much M*** and K**** we really enjoyed our visit yesterday.

A few things we found interresting:
  • Each tyre costs around AU $ 300
  • Prime Movers have Federal Interstate number plates
  • Interstate drivers have interstate truck licences.
  • The mud gaurds are over 1 metre high.
  • A prime mover weighs over 7 ton.
  • There are gauges for brakes, fuel, temperature for each axle, normal temperature, speed etc
  • There is a high demand for good drivers in Australia
  • Drivers can park their trailers for free at any truck stop.
  • Most truck companies do not allow drivers to have any passengers.
  • There is a bed for the driver behind his seat.
  • Truck drivers need to do a special course and get a special licence to be able to drive longer than a standard days driving. On this course they learn to recognise their signs of fatigue.
  • Drivers are responsible for tying down their own loads.
  • M***'s truck features in the K & S Freighters website.  Wonder if M*** knows ?
Who do you know that has an interresting job and would be willing to show your children the ropes or simply allow your children to explore their particular field ?

Some Encouragement.

My mom shared this on her Facebook and it so impacted me I wanted to share it here with you.

For those of you who would like the words:

A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully.
Before it blossomed, he examined it. He saw a bud that
would soon blossom. He also saw the thorns, and he
thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant,
burdened with so many sharp thorns?" Saddened by this
thought, he neglected to water the rose, and before it was
ready to bloom, it died.

So it is with many people. Within every soul, there is a rose.
The "God-like" qualities planted in us at birth, growing amidst
the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and
see only the thorns, the defects. We despair, thinking
nothing good can possibly come from us. We neglect to
water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We never
realize our potential.

Some don't see the rose within themselves. It takes someone
else to show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person
can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns and find
the rose within others. This is the truest, most innocent, and
gracious characteristic of love - to know another person,
including their faults, recognize the nobility in their soul,
and yet still help another to realize they can overcome their
faults. If we show them the rose, they will conquer the
thorns. Only then will they blossom, and most likely,
blooming thirty, sixty, a hundred-fold, as it is given to them.

Our duty in this world is to help others, by showing them
their roses and not their thorns. It is then that we
achieve the love we should feel for each other. Only then
can we bloom in our own garden.

The Parable of the Rose

As a mom I have had those moments where I look at the world around me and all I see are the thorns but it has been my friends and family who have helped me to see the roses.

Do you have any special people in your world who help you find the rose within ?

A visit to Australia Post Sorting Facility

About 12 years ago my Dad had the priviledge of going to a post sorting facility and told us all about it, because of his interresting storries it is something I have been wanting to do ever since.  Whilest in New Zealand we tried to organise a trip but could not get permission for our group to go on a tour. Two months ago I saw the trip advertised on a homeschool email letter I jumped right at it and reserved a spot for Sir N and myself.

Unfortunately we could not take photographs on tour but I did manage to take a few outside and of the models of the facility.

Some of what we learned:

  • Post that is unusually shaped is still hand sorted today.
  • Hand sorters sort mail at a minimum rate of 25 letters a minute.
  • Post has a 24 hour turn around in Melbourne.
  • There is a substance embedded in stamps that the machine can read and know if the correct amount of postage is attached to a letter.
  • The facility works mainly at night.
  • They process on average 6 000 000 items per night.
  • This rate climbs to 11 000 000 items per night during the Christmas season.
  • The facility operates six nights a week.
  • The facility operates Sunday night till Friday night.
  • Parcel post as a bussiness is growing by 15 % a year.
  • Standard personal mail is dropping by approximately 4 % a year.
  • Unclaimed mail is kept for a year.
  • After a year unclaimed post is sent to auction and the proceeds are donated to charity.
  • Last year this auction collected AU $ 3 000 000 for charity.
  • The strangest item posted and delivered was a banana.
  • Redirection orders are handeled by the postie on your round.
  • Around 20 USB keys are destroyed in each sorting machine each night due to being to thick and posted in a standard envelope.
Here are our photos:

Painting in the reception area

Olde post box at reception door.

We had to wear visitor safety vests.

Facility Model

Australia Post trucks at the depo.

What was Sir N's favourite part ?
  • When we saw the letters shooting past on one of the machines.
  • Looking at the model of the facility.
  • Seeing the man polishing the sensors on the post carrier up near the roof.
  • Being allowed to play with the rollers on the table
  • I liked seeing the outside where the trucks come to fetch the post.
  • I liked the lift which took the boxes of letters up to the roof to go on the conveyer.
  • I liked looking at the conveyer up near the roof.
  • I liked that they still hand sort today.

Tuesdays Treasures (1-8)

When Little Bear gets up one morning, his trousers are gone. Where could they be? Old Bear doesn't know. Sailor, Camel and Rabbit have seen them and used them in some un-trouserly ways. But no one can tell Little Bear where his trousers are now. When Little Bear finally discovers his trousers, even he is surprised at what he finds.

This book is one of Sir N's favourites at the moment.  I love the feel of all of Jane Hisseys books. Each and every picture is full of texture and detail, and are so beautiful little people spend hours looking them over.  My first two loved her books as well and as a result we have a few of her titles around the house!

To Label or Not to Label ??

I counted the other day and realised that I have been a Sonlight customer for thirteen years this year! Over the years I have collected a beautiful library of books courtesy of Sonlight.

Personally I have never wanted to label my books. Me put stickers on a book ? No I don't think so.

About three years ago I began feeling extremely frustrated with not being able to locate books I knew I had or finding them in the oddest spots on the shelf after hours of searching. In fact I was so frustrated that in desperation I finally gave in and ordered labels from Sonlight. I spent hours drawing lines, cutting strips and putting them onto my books then back onto the shelf. It has been well worth the effort and time investment that it took to do.

Now when I pick up a book I know exactly where it comes from and so do the rest of the family.

This is the process I use.

I gather the books together that need labeling. These are the books I ordered to update my Core A a few of these are double ups.

  • Next I grab the book lists from my Instructor Guides as well as the Book Label sheet from Sonlight.  As you can see I grabbed some scissors as I thought I would need these but Sonlight has pre-cut the book labels so it made the job of labeling soooooo easy this year.
  • Next I number the books on the book list and then I write the numbers onto the book label.
  • I then attach the numbered label to the book

I have numbered the books because it makes it easier to put them back in the "correct" spot on the shelf and easier to locate when I need it while using a Core. This process has made storing and locating my books so much easier.

Here I put my Core A from 2011 and the balance of my Core K from 1998.  There are a few titles "missing" due to being in storage till the end of September but I shant be needing them till October.

This is a small shelf of books in the living area. This bookshelf holds a lot of memories for me.  It used to be in my parents home and hold our encyclopedia set which I really enjoyed using. My parents bought the shelf and encyclopedias as a wedding present.

I decided to gather a range of books from Core P 3/4, Core P 5/6, Core A and a few others from the larger book shelves in the rumpus room and keep them in one handy spot, as I tend to forget what I have available.

I will take you on a tour of my four big book shelves in two months time ! My family often tease me about my love of books. My dad blessed me with three custom made floor to ceiling shelves which he designed and made for me and a friend in New Zealand built me one for small paper backs. Enough of that till a later post. I can't show you at the moment as they are in storage.  My aim is to sort my collection and blog about it later.

How do you organise your library ?

Blessings

Sir N's First Sonlight Box Day

I bought my very first core** and Science, Handwritting, and Math from Sonlight way back in 1998 and my first two roses really enjoyed the journey.

With Sir N starting school this year I decided to update my original Core K ( now called Core A)

My First Box Day

I remember my very first box day so vividly.  This box arrived and was far smaller than I had expected for $750!  I unpacked and stacked the books in my room and was worried about what my husband would say.  I took Sonlights advice and read the IG (Instructors Guide) which said put the books away and spend a week preparing.  Best advice ever, and I am so glad that I took it.

After the first week I knew I had made the best investment ever.  That IG was worth it's weight in GOLD!  and the $750 was a small investment into books that were worth every minute we spent together reading and learning together.

FedEx tracking

I have really enjoy the advent of the internet it has really added to the anticipation of receiving my box.  I eagerly watched my boxes progress accross the globe and was so surprised at the speed and efficency of Sonlight.

Last friday (5 Aug)  I placed my order on line in Australia just after lunch and my box arrived here on Tuesday morning (9 Aug) !

A picture is worth a thousand words so here is our story:

"Mommy can I open it NOW?"

Granny joined us for box day and showed Sir N how to wear his new paper scarf!

"Ooooo Mommy some more of those crayons!"

"Look how BIG that lightening is!"

"mmmmm that's interresting"

"Look they are swimming with the dolphins"

"Yes I can fit in the box!"

And so our new Sonlight adventure begins.  This week is a week of preparations and next week Monday will be day one of our 36 week year of Core A and Science A with Sonlight.

To read more about our curriculum choice for 2011 and 2012 you can have a look at my Curricula page.

What have you planned to use with your families Home School adventure this year ?
