20, 000 Leagues Under the Sea {Unit Study}

"On the NAUTILUS men's hearts never fail them. No defects to be afraid of, for the double shell is as firm as iron, no rigging to attend to, no sails for the wind to carry away; no boilers to burst, no fire to fear, for the vessel is made of iron, not of wood; no cove to run short, for electricity is the only power; no collision to fear, for it alone swims in deep water; no tempest to brave, for when it dives below the water, it reaches absolute tranquility. That is the perfection of vessels."  - JULES VERNE

Welcome to my first post for the 2014/15 Poppins Book Nook blog hop.  Each month this year we will share resources for a book we have read for the month according to a theme.

This months theme is: Where in the World. We have spent a delightful month exploring the wonders of ocean living, submarines, animals of the oceans and discovered the delights of YouTube schooling.

Paul read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne to Sir N.  Our version was published by Readers Digest, with illustrations by Joseph Ciardiello and an afterword by Clifton Fadiman. This version was printed in 1990 and was translated by Philip Schuyler Allen from the original work by Jules Verne which was publishe in 1870 under the title Vingt Mille Liues Sous les Mers.

We then enriched our experience with a few documentaries on YouTube as well as some DVD renditions of the book.

We really enjoyed our first month with the Poppins Book Nook and are looking forward to seeing the treasures shared by the ladies over the next 24 hours.  Be sure to come back next month to see our next adventure.  If you have any great resources for me to add to this list please post it below in the comments.

HSMJ He is providentially caring for me.

In my life this week…
I've discovered the Australian Homeschool Bloggers group.  It has been a great adventure meeting homeschool bloggers from Down Under.

It's been an intensely emotional week for me on a deeply personal level. If you think of me please pray for peace and His favour towards us.

In our home school this week…
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
  • Back to Recorder lessons for Sir N
  • Tennis on Thursdays
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

My favourite thing this week was…
What’s working/not working for us…
  • YouTube schooling is so much fun!
Things I’m working on…

In Bloggy world I’m reading…
A lot more than listed here! I managed to loose all 90 open tabs. The moral of the story read them, record them and don't rely on browser tabs to maintain your list for you ...
I’m cooking…
I’m grateful for…
  • The DSLR I was given a few years ago.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
This is my favourite bible verse.  When I feel down I look to the heavens and remember that He is providentially caring for me.

Visual Periodic Table by RSC {Tuesdays Treasures}

A few weeks ago I shared about a new book titled The Elements - a Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe by Theodore Gray.

This week I would like to introduce a fabulous resource by the Royal Society of Chemistry.  I love this website about the Periodic Table.
Visual Elements Periodic Table

Hover for a summary

Click through
Click on an element to be taken to a full page dedicated to that element. From here you get access to
  • Uses/ Interesting Facts
  • Atomic Data
  • Supply Risk of the element
  • Oxidation/Isotopes
  • Pressure/Temperature-Advanced
  • The History
  • Podcasts
  • Video's. The videos are EXCELLENT! and they are my favourite part of the whole site. You get to see experiments demonstrating that element. Watch a sample of the Iron Element on YouTube

Visual Element Table

The home screen has a number of options available too.
  • If you select Visual Elements you see the above table and hovering over an element shows a pop up box with a summary.
  • You can select temperature range and that will highlight the elements within your selection
  • You select a group range between 1-18 and it will highlight the group along with a pop up box explaining the group characteristics.
  • There are four periodic table block options too.  When selecting the block you are able to see the specific group highlighted along with an explanation of the block of elements.
  • There is an option to see the elements by periods, Lanthanides and Actinides.
  • You also have the option of selecting a classification of metal or nonmetal elements.

Elements by History

On this page you have three options.
  1. One click on a discoverer and up pops a small biography of a scientist along with a visual highlight of all the elements the scientist discovered.
  2. Add in a year anytime in the years 1 to 2014 and the elements known to man up the date entered will highlight.
  3. Hover over an element for a summary of who discovered it and when along with the name meaning

Elements by Podcast

Each element is presented via podcast to listen to.  From here you can download the transcript, download the podcast or go to iTunes.

HSMJ - I need more sleep

In my life this week…
Why is it that when people are angry with one another that they take to defamation ?  I've seen this happen to someone special this week and then was reminded of the scripture in Isaiah 54:17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord.

I have resumed my photography course! I was feeling a little despondent with it all and a friend recently encouraged me to take it up again.  What do you think ?

In our home school this week…
  • We are enjoying Season 2 of The Brinkman Adventures
  • Started a new geography book by Ann Voskamp.  So far we are both enjoying it.
  • Plugging away at spelling and history
  • Resumed recorder class after our time away.
  • Completed Studying God's Word Book C.
A look at our last two weeks via Instagram @chareenr

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
  • Some time at a park with families for a play date.  I have been trying to get to this park for six years.  I am so pleased that I finally made it there
  • We went to the park at Buckingham Reserve the childrend had a lot of fun.
  • Tennis lessons on Thursday
  • Play dates with friends.
My favourite thing this week was…

On Pinterest I found...

  • Those who study and share their wisdom and insight in 5 min talks.  I've enjoyed these ones on sleep this week
How to succeed? Get more sleep by Arianna Huffington. "shares a small idea that can awaken much bigger ones: the power of a good night's sleep. Instead of bragging about our sleep deficits, she urges us to shut our eyes and see the big picture: We can sleep our way to increased productivity and happiness -- and smarter decision-making. "She
Why do we sleep? by Russell Foster. "He is a circadian neuroscientist: He studies the sleep cycles of the brain. And he asks: What do we know about sleep? Not a lot, it turns out, for something we do with one-third of our lives. In this talk, Foster shares three popular theories about why we sleep, busts some myths about how much sleep we need at different ages -- and hints at some bold new uses of sleep as a predictor of mental health."

Turbo {Virtual Fridge}

This Week
Back and ready to go after our holiday last week.  A few weeks ago I shared how we discovered  The Lorax has a step by step drawing tutorial. This week we found that Turbo has one too.

Today we chose to draw Turbo in his racing outfit.  The step by step instructions were not as detailed as in The Lorax so we had to pause the DVD often but I am very pleased with the results.  What do you think ?

Wow!  This is super creative.  Look at this suit of armour out of duct tape.  Designed made and created by an eight year old!  Be sure to pop over to A Net in Time Schooling and see more detailed photographs of this neat self direct project.  He would love to hear what you think of his armour.

For a full tutorial (including a YouTube clip) pop on over to Kathy's Cluttered Mind and see how to make these DIY Bobble Heads.  So cleaver and effective.

Kennady has done a great job of some Mexican Folk Art - Amate Painting.  Pop on over to Homeschool Coffee Break for a tutorial on how to do this interesting Mexican Art.
